Manufacturing

Corey

One of the strengths of Orion’s Manufacturing Training Program is that we really take the time to get to know each individual. Participants in the program work one-on-one with mentors in a variety of production areas, which lets participants identify the types of work that they enjoy doing, while working on ways to improve in any needed areas.

Corey is a great example of someone who took full advantage of what Orion has to offer. When Corey came to Orion he had already demonstrated that he had a strong can-do attitude, but he lacked paid work experience. Corey helped to take care of his siblings who, like Corey, are on the Autism Spectrum. In addition to helping to manage the household by cooking, cleaning and doing laundry, he also got everyone ready for school and to the bus on time each morning, and he was there to meet his siblings each afternoon. During this time Corey also earned a certificate from Lake Washington Technical School.

Corey started in Orion’s Mukilteo program in 2018 and received training in several areas. He was well liked by Orion’s staff and mentors. Zandra Leitch, Director of Services – Mukilteo said, “Corey fit right in with the staff and was always willing to help wherever needed. Corey became well versed in many departments and he could be counted on to show up on time and get his work done!”

As Corey gained experience it became apparent that he was ready to take the next step and transition into job placement. Corey decided that manufacturing wasn’t what he wanted to do, so he worked with his job developer to create a resume tailored towards working at a grocery store. He soon had interviews lined up at Haggen and Target, and received job offers from both.

Now a key employee at Target’s Woodinville store, Corey is an example of success. Not only has he has proven that he is a reliable asset on Target’s team, he has been taking on more responsibilities, including training new hires. Corey’s success also earned him Orion’s 2019 Mukilteo Graduate of the Year award.

Congratulations Corey! We wish you continued success.
