Manufacturing Training

Sovanna

Originally from Cambodia, Sovanna relocated to the United States in 1997 looking better opportunities. Recently she came to Orion looking for job skills to help her find new opportunities, hoping to make a successful career change to a different industry. Sovanna had been doing warehouse work and wants to find a job that has room for growth. She has electronic assembly experience, and once she learned about Orion’s Manufacturing Training Program, she felt confident that this was the right program to help her gain the skills needed to achieve her goals.

Knowing that there are lots of jobs in aerospace manufacturing in the Puget Sound region, Sovanna had applied for positions with several companies, but lacked the experience those jobs required. Orion’s paid on-the-job training is helping her gain the experience that is in demand with area employers.

“Now that I’m receiving training in aerospace manufacturing, I’m working on parts for companies like Boeing,” Sovanna said. “I think my future is going to be a lot better!”

Mentors work one-on-one with program participants in the training program, helping them to learn and improve day by day. Mentors can modify the training program to concentrate on areas that need more work, and can help participants improve soft skills like attendance, punctuality, and teamwork as needed.

I am learning how to do several jobs, I understand what to do on the computer, and I’m picking up new skills every day. Be happy for me!

“I know that my mentor has more experience than me, and I’m being shown the right way to do each job,” Sovanna explained. “I am learning how to do several jobs, I understand what to do on the computer, and I’m picking up new skills every day. Be happy for me!”

Sovanna has been in Orion’s training program since September 2019. She has gained experience in Clamp Block, Packing, and Deburr. She has also taken Orion’s Shop Math and Blueprint Reading classes. She is hoping to find a manufacturing position in South King or North Pierce County and is willing to work any shift.
