What makes a good mentor? Attention to detail, patience, and great communication skills typically top the list. Hector Mercado Capistran is an example of all of this, and more!
Hector was originally a CNC Machining Mentor in Orion’s Auburn facility. He transferred to our Mukilteo location, and in doing so helped to establish Orion’s Manufacturing Training Program in Mukilteo.
When Hector works one-on-one with a participant he tries to meet them where they are at, and then with patience build from there. Hector related, “It starts with good communication, and working with a participant until they master a task. After that I’ll add another task, allowing them to build on their skills.”
The mentor training gave Hector tools that he uses, and he knows that the Orion process works. Hector knows that Orion has resources, including vocational counselors, instructors, job developers, and other mentors to help him support the program participants.
I’ve seen a Program Participant start from nothing, and go on to become the Graduate of the Year. It makes me proud knowing that I have a part in helping someone find success. That is what Orion is all about.

“I know I can be a little tough at times, but I’m not teaching the easy way to do a job, I’m teaching the correct way,” Hector explained.
As participants gain experience in how to perform a task correctly they learn meaningful ways contribute to the workflow, and their confidence grows.
